Various appointments

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010 | Sophie (Baby), Tattoo Removal | No Comments

I love back-to-school time. I don’t know why it makes me nervous, but it does. I’m old hat by now, knowing where my classes are without looking at the campus map and all that. Sophie will be fine, too, of course, though I am a little nervous about her starting first grade. FIRST GRADE. As in, no longer a kindergartener.  **sniffle**

Let’s see, yesterday she went to the dentist. Report: no cavities, four VERY loose teeth that no-one is allowed to look at, not to mention touch, and three of her four six-year molars have broken through. Okay. See you in six months!

Also yesterday was my second laser tattoo removal treatment. I’ll be blogging about that in more detail later. One word blog post about it now: OUCH. Yes, I know I’m a sissy. I’ll see them in 6 to 8 weeks.

Today, eye doctor for me. My contacts fit fine, though they’re REALLY expensive. REALLY. EXPENSIVE. Bah. Who needs contacts anyway? On a side note, my eye doctor last time, who did the original exam, was this gorgeous blonde woman. Today it was her husband, and together, they’re like the gorgeous super-eye doctor couple. Amazing. They ought to be doing modeling for eye doctors, not actually BE eye doctors. Good genes and brilliant eye care professionals? Some people have all the luck.

Tech support

This semester, I’m taking French and a Mass Media Communications class. So far (and I’ve only had one class of each), I really like them both. My French teacher (ma professeur francais?) may well be the nicest person ever born, with a gentle, calming voice to match. But, alors! The textbook!

Macomb has an online portal that students and teachers can use for communicating and posting assignments and such. It’s called ANGEL. But for some reason, the French department doesn’t use it. They prefer to use the site provided by the textbook, which does make some sense. All the material is already out there, so why transfer it to ANGEL? That would take ages.

Here’s the rub, though. The Macomb site is free. The textbook site is not. To buy the password for the site is another $65 above and beyond the $140 I already spent on the book. It’s a new edition, so I had to buy it new. Note that this book purchase already included a password for the site. According to tech support (yes, my textbook actually has a tech support number), I need not one but TWO passwords to log in. Actually, I need one to log in to the SITE, and another to log in to my CLASS.

Bah. I don’t think the instructor knows this. Seriously. That’s a LOT of money to spend on a PASSWORD.

I’m totally disgruntled.

A little early shopping

You know what always makes me feel better, aside from cheese?

Shopping. Otherwise known as “retail therapy.” Sure, I miss my family, and sure, I’m, as usual, scared of my new semester of school (I’m a total weenie, I know). But shopping, or rather, just browsing, makes me feel better. And I can actually say it’s okay, because I’m not buying anything, and it’s for the blog.

So… here are my picks for just-because gifts for a girl you like (or maybe like a LOT) and they’re all under ten bucks.

The snail necklace, camera ring, and ninja bunny pin (EEE!!!) are from ShanaLogic. The owl bank (love it!) is from Urban Outfitters and the owl necklace is from Forever 21.

I do feel oh-so-much better now. And I got a whole blog post done, too! *ahem* Not just this blog, either.

Ohh…

I’m so irritable right now. I know why, and it has nothing to do with PMS… well, it might have a LITTLE to do with PMS… it’s just that I’m sleepy, and I hate that I live so far from my mom/sister/neice/brothers etc. and that certain members of my family here are, well, nuts. And I adore them but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t eat me up, the problems that they have that I can’t solve but I try anyway.

And I still can’t find a job.

And 9 Books isn’t in the top 10 in the Pepsi Refresh Project now matter how much I nag my friends and family.

And school is starting soon and I feel like I’ve been going forever and what’s the point anyway since I’m getting a degree that I can’t see actually landing me a job.

And I’m broke.

And I hate that I’m being a complainer but I’m doing it anyway.

The ocean…

The ocean dance

The ocean dance

I had forgotten how loud and awe-inspiring the ocean can be.

Yesterday Melissa and I took the girls to Westport. Mis kept commenting on how unusual (freaky, even) it was that it was so sunny, not a cloud in the sky. It’s the ocean up here, in Washington, not that cool-surfer-dude ocean hundreds of miles south in California. This is all raw power, wind and sand and crashing surf.

It was also COLD.

And the ocean kept trying to get our feet.

Washington Trip: Day One

Little Tweets while I couldn’t use Twitter yesterday:

Both the flight from Detroit and the connecter in Dallas were uneventful and on-time. I don’t know how long this streak of exceedingly good luck can last, but here’s to hoping our trip home is just as smooth.

Reading “Stiff” and just got to the chapter on plane crashes as we’re taking off from Dallas. Perhaps I ought to set this aside for now.

Do not be tempted by how delicious the sound of the Boston Market Chicken Carver is from the in-flight menu. For $10, it ought to have been good, but sadly was NOT.

Is this Mount Rainier or Mount Saint Helens?

Landed. Safe. Woo!

Thanks, Jeremy, for picking us up.

Wow, so much Knightstep in one place! I’m so puny compared to these giant Knightsteps. I’m the under-watered Michigan variety, just like the hydrangeas.

I am going to kill mom’s neighbors. Who comes home at 3:30 on a Wednesday morning to sing a BAD rendition of Happy Birthday and carouse til 4:30 before passing out? This is obviously WEEKEND behavior!

Well, shoot

Look at me, making ammo!

Look at me, making ammo!

Yesterday John took me to the range. I’d never fired a handgun before and though, well, that sounds like fun!

Actually, it sounds LOUD.

But it was fun, and I really did pretty well. I hit the target in clusters, which is a good thing, even if they’re not right in the middle. I also discovered that I have a definite preference for the Kimber (a .45) over the Glock (.40).

And when we got home, John showed me how to reload, which I did for a bit.

After all, I am from Michigan, famous for its weird and heavily-armed militias.

Best daughter ever…

Best daughter EVER!

Best daughter EVER!

Oh yes, I have the best daughter ever. Sorry, Sophie, I do love you just as much as Fawn, but for today at least, she’s clearly the favorite.

This is what I saw when I opened the fridge this morning.

Yes, that’s right. It’s a Nantucket Nectars Half & Half. YUM. And the note? Extra-awesome.

You know, Fawn, you can still do stuff like this once you move. It’ll just cost a little more.

OMG OCD

Little signs, all in a row...

Little signs, all in a row...

New, pathetic proof of my OCD: my crop mastery signs on FarmVille are now in alphabetical order. And I’m feeling pretty good about it, too. Almost… proud…

I can’t help myself. What the picture doesn’t show you is that I have three of every tree, all grouped together, too. And one of every animal, calf with cow, pony with pony.

FarmVille is such a great way to express my OCD without fear of being ostracized.
